A Midsummer Night's Monsoon…(Sept. 11th)

Back to the Globe tonight!  We went back for a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", which is one of the few Shakespearean works that I LOVE-it's hilarious, even just reading it independently.  The class had groundling tickets (all about that authentic experience, huh?) so we got there on the early side to push our way to the front of the crowd.  It's very important to strategically place yourself and then STAY there as best you can.  We had a pretty good spot!

Most of our class stood in the same general area by the center stage, but some people went to the far left-front of the stage.  I wanted to be close, but not THAT close…it's all about perspective I suppose.

It was chilly when we left the hotel and we knew it was supposed to rain, so we all dressed for the weather--I don't know the last time I have been this cold in September! (UK probz) BUT, I will say this about the the groundling 'seating': all of the body-heat from everyone standing around you makes a HUGE difference when it is POURING rain (wait for it….) and cold.  This nice little photo is monsoon:

So the performance started, and it was hilarious.  Everyone was SO into it (cast and audience), and I was cracking up the entire time.

CUE DOWNPOUR!!!!!!

Thank goodness we all had our rain gear on, or it would have been a really, really miserable time.  It was still slightly unpleasant and cold (and damp…) but the laughter and everything happening on stage totally made up for it.  I honestly had such a good time and my tummy hurt from laughing.

^really excited rachy

The Globe is great because the performances are so interactive.  Characters were running all over the place, on and off the stage, into the seats… disappearing and then reappearing off stage…they were totally keeping us on our toes.  Every character was so passionate and enthusiastic about his/her performance!  I absolutely loved it.

Bottom (the guy whose head is turned into a donkey) was BY FAR the best (not surprising), and he kept doing this thing with his pinky finger whenever something was funny or he did something wrong/sneaky…for some reason H,R and I found it absurdly funny and we were doing the pinky-move all night in our hotel room.  Classic.

In all honestly, I'm kind of glad the weather was sub-par because it made the experience more authentic and realistic to what it might have been like in the original days of the Globe.  So for that, I am quite thankful! Professor Perabo couldn't have picked a better performance for us to see.
